Abstract:
We model the competition between digital forms of fiat money and private digital money. Countries digitize their currencies–by upgrading existing or launching new payment systems (including CBDCs)–to compete with foreign fiat currencies and private digital money. A pecking order emerges: less dominant currencies digitize earlier, reflecting a first-mover advantage; dominant currencies delay digitization until they face competition; the weakest currencies forgo digitization. However, delayed digitization allows private digital money to gain widespread adoption, eventually weakening fiat money’s role. We highlight how geopolitical considerations, stablecoins, and interoperability between fiat and private digital money shape the dynamics of currency competition.

Abstract:
We demonstrate that off-exchange (wholesaler) executions provide significant cost savings to retail investors. Wholesaler concentration has raised regulatory concerns; however, we show that the largest wholesalers offer the lowest costs due to economies of scale. The entry of a new large wholesaler reduces incumbent scale economies, resulting in higher execution costs. Most retail brokers route to multiple wholesalers and actively monitor their performance, rewarding those offering lower execution costs with more volume. While retail investors benefit from the current landscape across all stocks, those trading small stocks benefit the most.

Abstract:
Integrating signaling research with the institutional perspective on capital markets, we argue that, in conditions of radical technological change, investor perceptions about firm value are enhanced by the CEO's orientation toward digital technologies that exceeds the firm's industry peers. This base relationship is moderated by board characteristics so that the board members’ digital expertise and knowledge diversity enhance the effect of the CEO's relative digital technology orientation on firm value. Furthermore,TrustWallet安卓版下载 the monitoring power of independent board members who do not have digital expertise negatively moderates our baseline hypothesis, TrustWallet钱包安卓下载 whereas board monitoring exerted by independent board members with digital expertise has a positive moderating effect. To test our theory, we use advanced natural language processing techniques to develop the CEO's relative digital technology orientation construct combined with a unique, hand-collected set of measures associated with board members’ digital expertise and knowledge diversity in a sample of S&P 500 companies. Our article offers novel insights on how technology-related signals associated with the CEO's communications to shareholders interact with board characteristics in determining investor perceptions of the firm's value in conditions of high technological uncertainty.

Abstract:
One of the most ubiquitous practices on social media is sharing content with others to show affection or affirm an interpersonal connection. Extant consumer research has examined the circulation of objects fueled by desire or as repositories and carriers of emotion and value. The paper extends this work to understand how consumer relationships are shaped through the creation, consumption, and circulation of digital objects imbued with affect. Drawing upon interviews with both managers and followers of animal accounts and netnographic data of animal content on Instagram, this work theorizes how digital affective encounters on social media transpire through the circulation of animal content. The findings highlight the processes through which content is continuously imbued with affective cues to manage parasocial and interpersonal relationships. While affect-laden content can serve as a relational token when shared between friends and family, it can also be captured and modified by large accounts. As a result, the affective force of this content can reach mass audiences and become memetic. Our paper shows the significant role of affect as a mobilizing force of digital affective networks. Beyond animal content, the framework is transferable to the circulation of other social media content and consumer-influencer relationships.

Abstract:
We propose a model of lending, payments choice, and privacy in the digital economy. While digital payments enable merchants to sell goods online, they reveal information to their lender. Cash guarantees anonymity, but limits distribution to less efficient offline venues. In equilibrium, merchants trade off the efficiency gains from online distribution (with digital payments) and the informational rents from staying anonymous (with cash). While new technologies can reduce the privacy concerns associated with digital payments, they also redistribute surplus from the lender to merchants. Hence, privacy enhancements do not always improve welfare.

Abstract:
This study examines the impact of a query recommender system on user search behavior, sales volume, and consumption diversity within a leading mobile food delivery app in Asia. We find that access to a query recommender increases consumer purchase volumes by 1%–2% over 30 days while broadening consumption diversity at both the individual and market levels. Exploring the mechanisms by which these effects arise, we highlight the complementary, balancing role of query auto-completion features. Whereas the query recommender helps to expand a user’s consideration set by suggesting alternative and adjacent queries, the auto-complete feature helps to extend and refine the queries in a personalized manner. Our findings highlight the potential of query recommenders for increasing demand while enhancing consumer exploration and consumption diversity, particularly when deployed in tandem with auto-complete. Our study contributes to the literature on search behavior and recommendation systems, offering actionable insights for platform managers into the strategic design and integration of query recommenders to improve user engagement and market outcomes.

Abstract:
Can digital payments help reduce extreme hunger? Humanitarian needs are at their highest since 1945, aid budgets are falling behind, and hunger is concentrating in fragile states where repression and aid diversion present major obstacles. In such contexts, partnering directly with governments is often neither feasible nor desirable, making private digital payment platforms a potentially useful means of delivering assistance. We experimentally evaluated digital payments to extremely poor, female-headed households in Afghanistan, as part of a partnership between community, nonprofit, and private organizations. The payments led to substantial improvements in food security and mental well-being. Despite beneficiaries’ limited tech literacy, 99.75% used the payments, and stringent checks revealed no evidence of diversion. Before seeing our results, policymakers and experts are uncertain and skeptical about digital aid, consistent with the lack of prior evidence on digital payments for humanitarian response. Delivery costs are under 7 cents per dollar, which is 10 cents per dollar less than the World Food Programme’s global figure for cash-based transfers. These savings can help reduce hunger without additional resources, demonstrating how hybrid partnerships utilizing digital payment platforms can help address grand challenges in difficult contexts.
